Fire Weather

Fire Weather Tool

This Tool uses input from your belt weather kit readings.

It was programmed to follow the same steps and use the same tables from the belt weather kit and the 2025 IRPG.

It will generate FDFM, PIG and RH etc.

Wildland Fire Belt Weather Kit – Quick Steps

  1. Choose a Safe, Open Spot
    • Stand in a shaded area (or note if full sun)
    • Hold kit at chest height, out of direct sunlight/wind if possible
  2. Sling Psychrometer – Measure Dry & Wet Bulb Temps
    • Moisten wick with distilled water
    • Sling for 15–20 seconds (or until wet bulb stabilizes)
    • Record dry bulb and wet bulb temperatures
  3. Measure Wind Speed
    • Use wind meter or estimate with Beaufort scale
    • Take reading at eye level in open area for 10–15 seconds
  4. Determine Wind Direction
    • Face into the wind; use compass or note based on landmarks
  5. Estimate Cloud Cover & Weather
    • % cloud cover (0–100%)
    • Note weather: clear, cloudy, precipitating, smoky, etc.
  6. Record Elevation, Time, & Aspect
    • Use altimeter, map, or GPS for elevation
    • Elevation Relationship (Above / Level / Below)
    • Note slope (Which Slope Is Facing Sun) (N, S, E, W)
  7. Calculate Relative Humidity (RH)
    • Use IRPG Table with dry and wet bulb temps
    • Adjust for elevation if needed
  8. Determine Fine Fuel Moisture (FFM)
    • Use RH and temp to reference IRPG chart
  9. Determine Probability of Ignition (PIG)
    • Use dry bulb temp + RH with IRPG chart
    • Adjust for slope/aspect/shading (+5 PIG if fully shaded)

Pro Tips:

  • Calibrate sling every fire season
  • Sling away from body heat
  • Record conditions consistently for trends

🧠 Watch For These Danger Signs

  • Sudden wind shifts or gusts
  • Dry cold fronts
  • Cumulus clouds building into thunderheads
  • Rapid drop in RH with rising temps
  • Smoldering fuels suddenly igniting
